Custom objects

When contacts and deals are not the right shape at all.

About 4 minutes

Sometimes your business has a thing that is not a company, a person or a deal — properties, vehicles, matters, shipments, courses.

Steps

  1. Open CRM settings and create the object.
  2. Define its fields.
  3. Add records, by hand, by import, or through the API.
  4. Retire it if it stops being used — retiring keeps the data and stops new records.

You're done when the thing you actually track has a home rather than living in notes.

Before you create one

Ask whether custom fields on an existing object would do. A custom object is right when the thing has its own identity and lifecycle; it is overkill when it is really an attribute.

Gotchas

  • A custom object is not automatically wired into everything. Campaign enrolment and reporting are built around the standard objects.
